AE85/6 Front insert question.

Postby shazeal » Sun Jul 19, 2009 10:22 pm

I picked up some KYB "AE86" front inserts off TM, they appear to be for a volvo of some description however.
I measured them and the length, extended length and OD all match the AE86 ones. But wont the valving be way different, i mean volvos weigh like 4 tonnes or something... wont this cause problems with the handling?

well, what are you using them for?
shocks from a heavier car will be stiffer in a lighter car

If you ring stocks with the KYB number they will be able to tell you the valving, then you can ask for the same info for the stock ae86 ones. that will give you an idea of what they will be like.
the trick is matching the other end of the car.

well considering the ae85/86 shocks are sloppy joes it might work out quite nice. but will also depend on other factors like spring rate and sway bars.

I will be putting in just the normal TRD sports springs ~3/2.7 or so? I already had the rear KYB shocks but they are correct AE86 ones.

Ill give stocks a yell, didnt know they would have that info, thanks rev :)

I usually ring the Christchurch stocks branch, they seem to be overall way more helpful for annoying technical questions :D

Doesnt look good, I found the specs off Wikipedia... The volvo has a 2L+ engine too so alot of the extra weight is probably on the front.

Volvo
3,022 lb (1,371 kg)

AE86
2,075 lb (941 kg)

Ill ring and ask anyway.

The springs I have are 25mm lowering. Surely I wont need short strokes with that?
I just want to replace the super crap stock (car still has factory springs/shocks in it) stuff with semi-crap/good stuff so it doesnt feel like I am driving on a water bed with wheels ;)

Guy at stocks says he has no idea about the valving, as in they dont have that info. And said the tophats would be incompatible.
Im probably just going to stick them back on TM with the correct application listed and hope that someone actually owns a Volvo lol.
