older hilux engines questions

Postby flygt4 » Tue Aug 18, 2009 9:23 pm

hey guys.
I am looking at possibly purchasing a late 80's/early 90's hilux to cart my race quad around and fit a dog cage for moving them around too etc.
I'm most likely going to go for a base model ,single cab, 2wd version with the proper tray.

I'm unfamiliar with the small petrol engines a lot of these were fitted with. it would be good to get some feedback of any common issues with the engines and drivetrain on these.

There is an 1800cc petrol engine that come in early 90's models. anybody have any input on these?

and the same question for the 1600c petrol found on some earlier models?

If its a Y motor then they're basically a big K motor that doesn't rev. Will go for years and years but kinda gutless (not that it would matter much). R motors should be as strong. More issues with the bodies on them old girls than the drivetrain stuff

They suck the gas real bad

You'd be better off spending more and getting a diesel

Just my 2 cents

Yeah, very true. Price difference on the diesel vs petrol is a bit of a b*tch in purchase price though :(

why??
diesils of a similar era are gutless, use heaps of fuel, need RUC and carry more exspensive Rego.

better option would be to buy a keeper and replace the carby engine with a later EFI one

the mecanic at my last work place had a twin cab 3Y powered hilux, wasnt a rocket ship but nothing to complain about, no worries with towing and if the carb etc is kept in tune did fine on gas...
PM me for anything autoelectrical, Info or jobs etc....

We've got a 96 (?) at work with a 2.4 petrol (22R?) it goes bloody well and tow like a dream but a round trip from Wanganui to PalmerstonNorth and back through Ohakune with no load used a full tank. So they are a guzzler, and Id imagine the same vehicle with a 1800 or 1600 wouldnt be much better as you'd be on the gas hard most of the time.

at last check the RUC costs outweighed a benefit of getting a diesel, unless its a more modern engine.the diesels are also larger engines, 2.4 and 2.7L, and i expect that would offset the gas usage to roughly equivalent to the small petrols.

as stated, the purchase price on diesels is also generally higher, the petrol ones are less desirable, hence cheaper, as they are less suited to towing. thats great for me, as I won't be towing anything when my bike fits on the back.

I just want to make sure theres isn't some golden rule to avoid a certain engine etc but if they are Y series, I am slightly familiar with 3Y's and 2Y's. I know they will be the last thing to survive a nuclear blast.

had a mate with a 4x4 3Y that he put some headers and a snorkel on. Made a big difference to performance and economy, but was still almost as thirsty as my 93 V6 manual...
