Those MPG meter are gimmic anyway, as it will display current fuel consumption which is not true in long term. Also long term avg. is useless, due to nature that it has been done, and you don't know what you were doing wrong.
As I stated many times before the most economical acceleration will be near full throttle, that thing will show consumption going through the roof during "burn" period, and mislead the driver.
To properly measure economy, you will need to output engine efficiency on the display, not current "miles per gallon" or km/l. Efficiency of the engine is very engine specific so you cannot make a generic cheap gadget.
By Efficiency I mean energy conversion efficiency (power extracted from a quantity of fuel) and not volumetric efficiency.
