Getting a tight bucket out ???

Postby jondee86 » Sat Sep 19, 2009 3:23 pm

I was re-assembling a smallport head, and when I was dropping the
buckets in (all numbered), a couple were reluctant to enter the bores.
Without really thinking what I was doing, I tapped them in with the
handle of a screwdriver. And, of course, now that I find that they won't
rotate freely, I can't grip the buggers to get them out

So is this a biggie ?? When I press them in by hand they spring back,
but not as free as they should be. Will they free up if I leave them in
there as they are, or do I have to get them out and find the burr or
whatever it is that makes them tight ??

And more to the point, how to get them out ??

Cheers... jondee86

Sounds like the bores have been marked.
Most likely when removing the valve springs.

Not sure on the best way to get them out but when you do, give the bores the bucket sits in a clean up with wet and dry or something.

Think I might try using a heat gun to warm the head. Might free it
enough to pick the bucket out with channeloks, with a bit of cardboard
for soft jaws. Thats about all I can think of right now...

a strong magnet should do it, and if not you're on the right track with heating it, but i'd just chuck it in the oven at about 120 degrees, should loosen it up a bit without much risk of damaging the head

I've used grips before to remove buckets out of my 4age heads. As long as your careful where you grip the bucket, once removed both surfaces can be cleaned up. Might have had some issue with the head where the bucket goes in previous to you owning it? Or a late night and putting the bucket in on a slight angle??
Whatever the case grips will do the trick. I used reasonably thin vice grips they work wonders

Channeloks and a bit of cardboard FTW :D Can't see what the problem
is tho... sure not obvious to the naked eye, or to the naked finger. The
buckets just get tighter the further they go into the bore. I'll give them
a lick with some wet and dry just to make sure they are clean, and check
for burrs at the top of the bore.

These things are a real tidy fit, so it wouldn't take much to bind them up.
