Installing van rear seats...rules

Postby ~SlideWays~ » Mon Jun 07, 2004 7:40 pm

1. Its not a toyota but does anybody know what the rules are when putting seats in a van that never had any in the back? (its a bedford cf).

Is it legal?
Will it need a cert?
Does it have to have seatbelts?

I've heard a weird explaination that if the back seats take up less space than the storage room then you don't need seat belts (for the back).

2. If i put a petrol engine in it (that was available in the model range, i think) instead of the RD28 Nissan diesel that is in it now will it need to be certified?

Thanks

pretty sure the seats will need belts, unsure about cert.

for the engine you will get away with putting in a petrol engine that was in the series without a cert. Ive changed for bigger, available standard, motors in several of my cars and never been pulled up about it.- as long as its all safe etc.

There would have to be a cert for sure man. Or something is wrong with the system.

I think bedfords were marketed by holden here with the 202 (maybe even 308?), so since its holden powered i'd assume the diesel is factory because holden had a deal with nissan for their 3L 6's in commodors at that time. Plus its got the diesel tax sticker.

Back to the seats: I was at pick a part today and there was a vanette that had rear seats which turn 180 degree's. I dont remember seeing seat belts either....hmmm. unless the were mounted straight to the seat, not to the floor/side wall.

Still wondering/thinking if its possible to put seats in the back....(to fit more people legally)

the cf bedford was not sold new with the ld28. thats just a very popular conversion.
they were sold new with 2.3ltr 4cyl sllloooooowwww or the 202 cu inch straight 6.

as for cert id be asking the place that does ya wof. possibly being before a certain year may exempt it, but fitting them now may mean you need a cert

your car will be registered somewhere in some file or computer saying how many passengers the vehicle can take. If you were removing rather than adding rear seats, you would declare the vehicle as a 2 seater or something. Have a look round the www.ltsa.govt.nz website and see what you can find.

Im keen to know bout some of the rules too, me and my mates have a mitsi chariot and we want to turn the middle seats around to face the back-back seats so its limo styles 8)

I dont know about legally but i have *seen* ;) this down a few times for the undie (even heard stories of one group of people welding them in, right above the gas tank dodgy!!!!) anyway unless they cam factroy its a PITA, because factroy seats are designed to distribute the load effciently (ie thru the chassis rails etc) and hence if you just bolt em through the floor pan, it might just rip the floor out locally to the bolts in a crash.

Also alot of van seats ive seen have lap belts, which are attached to the seat frames, where the seat frames bolt to the van...

hope that makes sense, havent slept....

interesting, im trying to workout

if they are folding seats, the vehicle technically still has more commercial room than passenger room, so they are legal, i have to check this out though, my suzuki carry wants more seats, it begs for it
