Postby deaf_rattle » Sun Oct 18, 2009 3:04 pm

I tried to find information regarding battery mounting, but didnt have much luck.

Are there any guidelines available?

where are you trying to mount it?

my cert guy didn't even check mine (battery in boot) but maybe he forgot, or overlooked it

it was mounted in the boot in a battery box before, with just the strap holding it down. I believe that wont pass cert like that.

Looking at mounting it abit more securely this time round.

Although at a quick glance I couldn't see anything about batteries in the cert guidelines, it might be just one of those common sense things, it must be secure. Which I guess can be open to interpretation.

I just mounted mine by the MSNZ Schedule A specs:

(b) Batteries located in the cockpit/cabin shall:
(i) Be mounted on a flat metal base, and
(ii) Have two insulated metal clamps affixed by a minimum of 8mm (ISO8.8)
bolts and nuts in combination with under floor counter plates, and
(iii) For 'wet cell' batteries an independently attached leak-proof box vented to the outside of the vehicle exterior is required.

FYI: Those factory long hook threaded things that hold the battery down are only 6mm.
I found out that old(early 80's) mazda 323 have 8mm ones...
Here's mine.

Another question how is that insulated from between the plate and the terminal - looks to be pretty close and not any form of insulation that i can see in that picture.
Plus don't think you actually need seperate bolts for the box and the battery, if you break the battery mount bolts chances are you've had that much of a shunt that the box is just going to split around the bolts or if it's a plastic jobbie the plastic will just break apart anyhow, then you end up with fpr's scenario

Many moons ago when i did battery relocation I brought some M8 threaded rod to use as the "bolts" it was great because I could cut it to length to suit the battery height etc.

From memory the under floor counter plates are required to have radiused corners and chamfered edges to prevent them ripping through the steel on impact and also have a minimum size/thickness requirement for MSNZ. (though this might only be for MSNZ seat and belt mounting)

My 'insulation' is several layers of duct tape on the clamp bar things(just as thick as normal electrical wire insulation). Yes, it is pretty close. I used to have a much bigger battery and the terminals were further apart.

Scrutineers have never said anything about having the fuel and battery in the same box.
They were only concerned if it was vented or not. The big as hole where all the hoses come in/out counts as a vent.

I've heard a few people previously confuse MSNZ regulations with WOF regulations, you dont need to have the battery vented, or many of those other things if the battery is in the cabin of a road car for wof/cert.

Which is not to say it's not good practice to 'future proof' any work you do incase it has to conform to those regulations later, as well as doing it as safely as possible...

But it isnt required.

Best way to find out what's gonna be okay, ring up the cert guy who's going to be looking over your car.

Yeh, I got my cert with NO box over the battery. I needed the box to pass scrutineering.
