Random flat spot?

Postby cat007 » Sat Oct 17, 2009 5:04 pm

Hi all

Noticed today, and possibly yesterday, but today it's really bad.
There's a shudder, almost like a really out of balance wheel.
I cant see any missing weights

I did notice however, that when slowing down, you can feel what appears to be a flat spot.

Either a flat spot or the wheel is no longer round

I've not locked the brakes so cant see how it could be a flat spot. Can wheels become oval if they are old, or maybe taken past their max speed etc?

Cheers

Hunt

Chuck it on a balancer, that should reveal all.

If it has been sitting in one spot for a while it could result in a flat spot.

Main reason the yanks put their cars on stands during the winters.

Is one of your brake rotors warped or cracked maybe?

Could be that you just have a bulge in one of your tires, that will make it feel like that as well

haha nah - no handbrakies - too hard with a 'twist and release' handbrake :P

I'll see if I can take a long lunch one day and shoot over the bridge for a visit :)

also check you don't have a buildup if dirt ect on the inside of the rim, that can put a wheel out of balance by quite alot..

also as tiers wear the balancing can be affected depending on the imperfections/defects in the tier (is worse on cheaper tiers)

Good point - I'll take a hose to the rims

Seems strange that it happened overnight though....

if it is dirt then youl need to take to them with a scraper of some form, a hose wont do much lol

to check for out of round/buldges you can just jack it up and spin the wheel and watch it compered to one spit on the inner guard, the surface should stay in the same place, if it moves a bit youv got a problem, if you get what i mean

if none of that works take it off for a look and you may need to take it for a balance.

also it could be a wheel alignment issue if none of that works

prosses of elimination

Well I didn't take the wheels off but found what appears to be a bulge about 4 inches long running around the inside of the tyre.

The tyres have heaps of tread but must be old as they're all cracked around the base of the tread.

Bit of a shame as I cant afford new tyres right now. Maybe I'll just chuck my supra rims on :D
