easy way to undo flywheel

Postby frost » Fri Oct 30, 2009 3:37 pm

please do not post, i will update with more how to for the tech faq,

to undo flywheel bolts with out any special tools, simply use two of the big bolts from the bellhousing to engine, i used the top two, they have a dip in the heads to snugly fit the flywheel teeth, thread one in the wing and lock one in the teeth,
place on exhaust side to undo and intake side to redo,

to come later,
how to fix a dead cold start wax idle control valve, with simple tools, save $$.

I've always used another method that I read about on celicasupra.com.
You remove the spark plugs and wind the crank to the appropriate stroke (compression or exhaust) in which the valves are closed. Then feed in several meters of nylon rope into one of the bores. When you can't feed any more in, then you can tighten or loosen the flywheel/flex plate bolts. This also works when you are trying to loosen or tighten the front crankshaft pulley bolt. Once tightened, you can wind the crank back a little to relieve the pressure on the nylon rope and remove it.

Just make sure you are doing this on a cylinder that will have closed valves.

i'm sure the nylon rope method could result in a bent conrod, the 2 bolts method couldn't

if i dont have an impact gun on hand i use a small piece of chain, chain one end to the flywheel / flex plate and the other to a bellhousing bolt.

Wow, are you taking the piss!

That sounds like a terrible idea.

I'd never want to stuff a combustion chamber full of anything, in that manner.

Another method i use is a cut off section of ring gear with a bolt welded to the inside of it. Wind a bellhousing bolt into the block and the teeth interlock against the bolt allowing an easy way to undo the flywheel bolts. (and tightening them too)

Frost your idea is the easiest without having to make up any special tools.

what we have at work is a number of old valves from scrapped heads which we have heated up and bent at right angle, pop the stem end into a bell housing bolt hole and the head end locks into the ringgear teeth.

yeah thats a good method.

I use a small piece of angle iron if doing perkys and no compressor. It just wedges into ringgear and against a bellhousing bolt.

otherwise i norm just blow it off with 6hex and rattle gun.
