damage the paint?!?! $&#$% i'm such a noob ... so excust question ... but that won't matter, as long as you're not a spaz and spill it on the car ... right?

Well the right one will damage the paint, if it says that it will not damage the paint it will mean that you got wrong fluid.

Don't use engine flush. It is just plain kerosene. It ruins seals, and sometimes can dislodge sludge that will block oil pick-up line.

Dot 3,4,5.1 are compatible with each other alcohol based and strip paint if spilled. Different boiling temps

Dot 5 is silicon based, does not strip paint. Not compatible with leftover dot 3,4,5.1 fluid.

Alternatively look in your owners manual if you have one or look online. Failing that often the DOT rating is marked on the rubber cap of the fluid reservoir.
