Clicking fuel pump relay

Postby Akane » Thu Dec 17, 2009 7:13 pm

So, everything seems to run A LOT smoother now, changed injector lag times (woops, forgotten about that), but now the fuel pump relay on my SW20 is going mad?

I have a Walbro 255lph in there, did not do any other resistor / pump modifications.

The vid explains itself pretty much, any ideas would be appreciated

update:

Trying to do some self help here, pulled the relay off and looked up the BGB, but it's not clear which pin is which.

would seen you have a dodgy earth somewhere? dirty terminals or something shorting out? check the remote wire with a test lite to see if its flashing ect

process of elimination.. try a different relay aswell

There's a central earthing point for a lot of relays (like 5+ wires bunched up to a metal ring), didn't have that on before and car wouldn't start, now it's starting fine so I don't think it's a bad contact for relay earth, but it could be a short in the wire. Most probably is the relay itself that lost it's marbles, my P/S relay is perma dead right now.

I'll try another relay first but before I do I wanna run some diagnostics on this one, which I can't with that online BGB not showing which pin's which.

Is it common for relays to fail like this? Random clicking. Or has my whinebro pump killed it?

Edit: found the same relay page on my paperback BGB, I did step one on checking continuity and it's fine. Don't have the right tools for step two (need clips and power source).

Next is checking resistor pack tomorrow.

Hmm it sounds and looks to me like its loosing the feed from the ECU or dropping earth or power to it, good fun

What I understand from the diagram is, the relay can only be 1 of the any 2 state, high or low mode, even if it loses power it'll be stuck on high mode? Which shouldn't affect the idle at that noticeably.

I think you'll have one in your car as well. Did you bypass it?
