4agze knocksensor questions

Postby themaleman » Sun Dec 20, 2009 8:15 pm

ok i broke yet another dam knock sensor trying to replace it with the engine in the car! :(
i have read on here about people with link computers not using a knock sensor.

can i do this on a standard computer? or will having the sensor unpluged send the engine check light on again?

the car isnt going yet so i cant try it with it simply unpluged

car in question is a latemodel ae92 gtz

Car will run without it,

but check light will be on and it will be well down on power.

ok so i have to replace it.

my next question is, dose it mater where abouts i put it? i see thers a similer hole to screw it into on the next cylinder over, looks to be in a more accesable spot. its curanlty on 4th cylinder

Would that apply to all engines that run knock sensors Matt? Might have to fix mine up before the next playday if it does......

Ran mine up on the dyno the other day throwing a code for the knock sensor, ended up doing the run with it unplugged. Appears to go into limp mode and pull all timing, to say the results were lacklustre would be an understatement ;)

Pretty much yeah.

Anything with a knock sensor will run closed loop timing kinda,
as so if it knows it cant detect the knock it wont let the timing run as far advanced as it should be, and so you loose power,

and you cant remote mount them,
as they are more like an engine noise detector, as so are always detecting a small amount of noise, so if you bolt it to say the inlet manifold,
or cable tie it up and earth it, it wont detect the normal amount of noise and so does the same as it not being there.

I used to know a ropehead who had a hotted up WRX.
The typical person who knows nothing about cars. He was telling me (pub talk) how he made it run a whole heap better after he relocated the knock sensor. Needless to say it blew up a few weeks later. You get that.

I think he might mean relocate it to a different thread hole on the block.

Not just put it somewhere else, thats rediculous

Seems strange considering they have the same block and bore diameter is the same, or is it just that the plug is different?

I went through this ages ago.

The 4agze AFM version engine would not run on any other knock sensors but a 4agze afm one.

The MAP ones might ruin on other 4age knock sensors though.

Had the same issues with mine a wile back. a 4AGZE wont run on any other knock sensor other than a 4AGZE knock sensor, AFM and MAP.
