Installing Air Horns

Postby celica_xr9145 » Mon Dec 28, 2009 11:21 pm

I got a set of duel air horns for xmas for a bit of fun for my Celica GTR 4WS ST183. Just have a few questions before i install them tomorrow.

1. Are they legal?

There not musical ones, just a single tone.

2. Do i wire them so they go off with the factory horn, can i replace the factory horn with the air horns or do they need to be wired to a seperate switch?

3. What are the basics of wiring it in? (Instructions are pretty much useless as always)

It comes with the 2 trumpets, compressor and a relay.

4. It doesn't come with any wires so what gauge wire shall i be looking at getting?

Sorry for the sh*t load of questions, would rather do it right first time 8)

1. Are they legal?

Yes

2. Do i wire them so they go off with the factory horn, can i replace the factory horn with the air horns or do they need to be wired to a seperate switch?

I wired mine to a seperate switch on the dash so no old lady has a heart attack when the WOF inspector checks my horn. Plus I reserve the air horns for REAL w**kers, not just everyone I toot at

3. What are the basics of wiring it in? (Instructions are pretty much useless as always)

Google for wiring air horns, will be plenty of info out there. They usually come with a basic diagram which is all ya need.

4. It doesn't come with any wires so what gauge wire shall i be looking at getting?

Not sure, I used wire I had lying around, someone else will know. Bigger wire will be better than smaller wire. Mainly on the 12v supply to the compressor though.

They're legal, can be used with or without factory horn

Easier way is to use the original wiring to the original horn, disconnect that and use it to switch the relay for the air horns. Wire should be anything rated at around 20A to comfortably cover it. Wiring it up will depend if your horn button supplies power or earth to the factory horn.

In either case, if you can sort out how a relay works then you should be able to work it out.

Other wise just ask, they aren't that complicated to wire up

Thanks for the replies, have just started now.

One thing i dont understand is how to make it go off with the original horn.

Do i have to tap into the electrical wire that goes to the original horns?

Also, to get the power, do i have to tap into the main horn fuse?

Also, would you recommend upgrading the fuse from a 15A to a 20A?

The main problem at the moment seems to be finding room to mount the trumpets and the compressor :?

Should make it reasonably clear (I hope ) With pin 86, you should just be able to unplug the wire from your current horn and plug it onto the relay. Unless you're wanting to run both, then just tap a feed off it...your horn button should supply power I think.

Yea horn wire normally supplies power, as is grounded by being bolted down.

Thanks for the diagram Dell'Orto, simplified things loads!

Its all in and wired up and well, its loud.

Only problem is that i've mounted the compressor behind the bumper but is visible once you lift the bonnet. You can even see a little bit through the carbon fibre strips.

Do you think it would be alright leaving it there or do you think its too much of a risk getting it wet?

Problem is that the engine bay is quite packed so there isn't much room. Unfortunatly i couldnt use the factory horns due to needing the holes for the trumpets. :?

Spray it black if you want to hide it, and don't drive in DEEEEP puddles and it will be fine with the odd bit of rain.
