Painted surfaces - do i have to sand to bare metal?

Postby DeeCee » Mon Feb 22, 2010 5:52 pm

If some of you have been following my project thread (probably not  ) I have etch primed and painted various pieces.

My question is, for example, do i have to sand back to bare metal on a surface that is mated to another surface? Eg one of the mounts had a bare metal face which was attached to the engine block which is bare metal.

So do I have to go back to bare metal again on that face/surface?

Simple but I dont' know so I ask :)

Cheers

So you've painted a previously bare metaled surface? In that instance, not at all, its not like its a precision fit.

Yes, I have painted a previously bare metal surface

example: bracket that attachs the drivers side engine mount to the engine.
The flat surface was previously bare metal.

If I do paint over the etch primer on the flat metal face, will it cause issues later if the paint compresses its minutae amount and I end up with loosened bolts?

I know it may seem pedantic, but I'd rather not have issues later :)

Cant see it being an issue unless you layer heaps of paint on it, most of it will rub off anyway. Use Loctite on the bolts if you're that concerned ;)
