Subaru B4 - Turbo Oil Leak Question

Postby Heylin » Wed Apr 14, 2010 5:33 pm

Not a Toyota I know, but noticed a slight burning smell after running for the last few months and the other day found where it was coming from.

Seems a small amount of oil has been leaking from the primary turbo housing onto the dump pipe (enough to make a burning smell but not register on dip stick).

Cars been doing alot of short trips for the past year (less than 5km each morning, girlfriend drives to work).

Can short trips thin the oil with fuel enough (due to running rich) that it would cause turbo seal leak ? oil is very dark brown and smell fumy.

Car has done 154,000 time for new primary turbo ?? oil change every 6 months with Valvoline VR1 Racing Semi Synth

External oil leak most likely has nothing to do with condition of turbo.
I am not sure what sort of oil feed they have (clamped hose, banjo, gasket or fitting) but your problem might be due to leaky oil supply/drain line.
They are known to leak cam cover gaskets and from O-ring in the powersteering bottle.

I would recommend Subtech if you are in Auckland, if you are not comfortable approaching this problem yourself.

Had all the cam cover seals done to fix a previous oil leak, this is definately coming out the turbo area, be good if its an oil drain line, easy fix.
