AE92 rear uprights on an ae82?

Postby ChaosAD » Tue May 04, 2010 7:26 pm

Has anyone checked if the ae92 rear uprights will fit an ae82?

I need to fit a pair of ae92 rear shocks to an ae82 but the bolt spacings are different.

Seems you've answered your own question.
The spacing of the holes to the carrier are narrower.
I've never used AE92 in AE82 but have done the reverse by using struts with one elongated hole.

Yea, the ae92 struts wont fit the ae82 uprights as the bolt spacings are different on them, and I dont think the wof guys will be happy with the bolt holes being elongated.

Im looking to see if I can fit ae92 uprights to the ae82 (if I use ae92 struts).

They look like the right design but im not sure if the control arms etc will line up.

Sorry, didn't read your post properly.

The struts we used came out of an ex Bathurst class winning car and went into our rally car. The extent of the elongating was so minor the washer actually covered it.
We used them in the Taranaki tarmac rally once only and then discarded them. I still have the strut bodies lying around somewhere because finding rears with theaded tops is difficult.

Had we modified them ourselves we would have welded a washer on each outer face. Doubtful a WOF inspection would have picked up either method.

Can't help with the uprights sorry.

im running ae92 rear shocks/uprights with ae101 brakes in my ae82 fxgt. can swap the top hat to change bolt pattern to fit strut tower. two of the three lower bushes bolt up.. but the trailing arm bush doesn't. just need a new bush to suit or shorten the ae92 bush down to 40mm. the ae82 lower arm needs to be notched about 5mm to clear the ae92 upright. (i cut two slots and bent the middle piece up). <-- that is the only thing a wof inspection will find not looking like factory. everything else bolts up. also may need to use ae82 brake hose on ae92 caliper if mounting tab is different.

more detail in my project thread, 4th post down.

these the parts required to do ae92/ae101 conversion..
ae101 dust shield (yes it's a separate part)
ae101 rear hub (55mm locating hole for disk but steps down to 54mm for wheel)
ae101 rear disk 266 x 9mm
ae101 rear caliper
ae92 strut
ae92 spring
ae82 spring cap
ae92 upright/knuckle (the hub bolts to it)
ae92 trailing arm outer bush modified shorter to 40mm wide (fits in the ae92 upright)
ae82 brake hose (ae101 brake hose doesn't fit the ae82 chassis mounting bracket).
ae82 (disk type) hand brake cables
14" or larger wheels

The ae82 hole is narrower by approx 10mm.

So to me the easiest way is to elongate the hole 10mm.

yip this works a treat , i used ae92 struts , cut the top off and put in koni adjustable inserts , bolted from the bottom , and a washer hides any elongated hole
