3s voltage problem st205

Postby Anth_555 » Sat Jun 05, 2010 8:34 pm

i was driving home tonight and my stereo completely died and my dash lights got dimer and dimer along with my head lights. i have a apexi powerFC and put the monitor mod to there battery voltage and with head lights off was reading 6.7 volts . got home turned off the car disconnect the battery for 10mins then can back to it, hooked it up and the stereo works and the lights arnt dime, voltage was reading bout 9.5 and dropping (car was off). it wouldnt start everything flashed as it tried to turn over. got another battery and put it in started car and everything seemed to be working ok. but the voltage was 11 and with the lights on 10 but was holding.

tried original battery in my other car and when you try to turn it over the dash lights just dim all and wont turn over. have put that on the charge.
at no time in the celica dose the battery light come on not even when the key is on.
i have done some delooming afew weeks ago and am thinking that a wire may be touching another.
i have a spare alternator that i will try tomorrow and will cheak wireing.
also i dont have much for earthing so ill add some more tomorrow

has anyone got some help full ideas. seems strange the the battery light dosnt come on which makes me thing a crossed wire

thanks anthony

It looks like your alternator is not charging.
Most likely your battery light circuit has been affected by your delooming (hence no battery light or charging).
Does battery light comes on when you turn the ignition on?

What wires have you touched? Check if the battery bulb is OK, and continue from there.

just before xmas my mate whos a sparky deloomed the engine loom and havnt hade any probems. ive just done the wireing that runs round the egine bay and im sure nuthing is exposed. the 3 wire plug on the aulternator is a bit dodgy and the wires could have touched so ill replace that to. yea i was thinking it could need replaceing.

Probably a dead regulator in the alternator.

Have you checked the fuses?

I would say chech fuses as above then check all the wiring to the alternator and ensure you are the required voltages and also fix the charge light. Sounds like the alternator is not charging becuase its not getting power to excite it.

al fuses are ok. theres power at the alternator. have traced the wireing al the way to the cluster and have power there to. not to sure what to check now

The light circuit. It is integral part of charging system, no light no charge.

pretty easy to check....

jumper and start the car, if your voltage is not 13v+ youve got an alternator or wiring issue,

theres 4 wires in total on the alternator, 3 being on the small plug,

one is the exciter, this comes on with the key and goes to the charge fuse
one is charge light, this goes to the dash via a diode
one is battery rail sense which goes direct to the battery usually around the battery post area to keep the voltage correct.

the fat 10m nut post is obviously the output terminal
