Rebuild Tein Coilovers? How much and options?

Postby ants_ae92 » Sat Jun 12, 2010 9:39 pm

Brought some Tein Type HA adjustable coilvers second hand off trademe for my AE101 BZ-T wagon (fairly cheap). They were in an unknown condition, so I expected that they may have needed some work. Even on the hardest rebound setting, it is very slow to return to the normal position. Only the back ones seem to be an issue currently.

I know autolign can rebuild them, but has anyone had to do that kind of work before? How much did it cost? Has anyone had quotes for a full rebuild?

If they weren't clunky, could they get away with just fix the seals etc.

I guess my plan of attack now is to try them for a bit (i have 2 weeks off anyway) to see how bad it is.

Any Thoughts?

The hardest setting should be the slowest return...

Very hard to tell a price ith being stripped as you can't tell what parts will be needed.
Also being rather old parts may not be stocked anymore an it will have to be adapted to newer components.
Really the only way you are going to find out, is to have it done.
Could be upto $800 each for a full rebuild.
You have to be very careful buying TEINs off trademe, 9 time out of 10 the "good deals" end up being $$$

Thanks Mr Revhead. I may have been rather lucky here! :o

Chucked them in today and they seem fine.

I was thinking slower return = Crappy shock! But in this case, they are still very stiff even on the middle setting, and have no problems handling the bumps.

Didn't have enough time to adjust the height to what I wanted, and I am still deciding on whether I will keep the rear in for now (I think I might take them to autolign to see if the can refill it reseal it). Theres no clunking from the shock, but obviously, I don't want it leaking fluid everywhere.

Well after a week or more of them in the car, they aren't leaking. Also, very happy with the results over my old combination,

(RSR wagon springs, Monroe gas shocks in front, KYB excel G's in the rear).

Less body roll cornering, less nose dive braking, and no chassis rub :D (18's plus lowered plus standard shocks = chassis on wheel action). I can handle the slightly bumpier ride of them! :D

Now since my brake pads are on the last legs, time for the next modification.

Good to hear

They were brought in good condition, but with them sitting around so long didn't want to guarantee their condition.
