Dead Electrics

Postby carlos3 » Sat Jun 26, 2010 6:22 pm

Thers are some dumb buggers around, and I'm one of them. Put a new battery in the 1998 Corolla 1.8 GLX today, and inadvertantly installed it the wrong way around.(i.e positive to negative) The terminals were back to front from the old ones, but thats still no excuse. So the car got powered backwards, and is now stone dead. Is ther a main fuse somewhere thats likely blown,or is it more serious than that?
Thanks

I remember hearing voltage regulators sometimes blow up too. Pays to check.
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

The big(ger) fusible links in the engine bay fuse will be blown.
Highly unlikely you've done any damage other than that.

have a clear top on them so you shouldn't have any problem spotting them.

provided the ignition was in the off position its unlikely uve caused serious damage.
any fuses with battery supply could be blown, main to the alt (big clear top fuselink in engine bay) is most likely but it would pay to check all fuses with a test lamp,

pretty straight forward.....

(had a customer with an AS300 who swore he didnt turn the ignition on with the battery in backwards, turns out he was a dirty liar.....
fried igniton module for the win......$1300 ex japan)
PM me for anything autoelectrical, Info or jobs etc....

The alternator has diodes inside.
When the battery is reversed the diodes conduct and blow the fuse.
All the other electronics normally have a diode in as well (reverse polarity protection). It's to blow the fuse when the battery is reversed.
