Depends on how low it is. Fairly big sidewall compared to a 215/40

1990 NA6 MX-5 - because reasons

OMG so shiny!

Why would you? :? Doing some off roading are we?

I assume they are subaru sized tyres and you are getting them for cheap of something :?: Can't see any other reason than $$$ to go with a tyre so different to factory sized.

There is a 5.1" difference in rolling circumference over the 215/40/17.

Pretty sure 205/40 17 is the same size as factory though. Which means 6.5% (a site told me that so could be wrong)

Yeah that is correct. I wasnt sure on AE111 standard tyres so couldnt compare :P

It means that at 100k's you are doing 106.

so the problem is the 45 profile not the 225 width

Combo of both. 45% of 225 is more than 40% of 205.

Either way check what clearance you have now from the struts as mine comes pretty close of 205s. 225s may rub on the strut / inner guards on full lock.

Over the 205/40 for example, you have gone to a bigger diameter and a wider width, so you're just increasing the chances of getting rubbing. That's ignoring any handling difference having the wider tyres may or may not having on the car.

We'll ignore the fact that if a WOF inspector was picky you could fail for using tyres greater than 5% bigger than factory.

yep wrong tyres mate!

215 40 17 would be the absolute biggest..

if its lowered you may have issues with rubbing, can do you a really sweet deal on toyo tyres if you like?

Ive run 215/40/17s on mine in the past, they just fit.

With that profile and width dependent on your offset you might get rub on the strut or spring perch as well as guard rub, the bottom of the perch can be "massaged" up slightly with a hammer, but if your hitting the strut your knackered. All and all not good.
