I've got another stubborn CV and I'm wondering what real mechanics do after the "smash at it with a big hammer until you run out of breath and all the stuff on the bench has fallen onto the floor" stage?

I'm thinking of cutting the cage with the angle grinder till the cup comes off and then carefully grinding a groove into the bit left on the axle and splitting it the rest of the way with a cold chisel.

Any better ideas?

Stick it in a big press. Bigger hammer. Soak with something like wurth Rostoff

Hit it harder. If the outside comes to bits (thus showing you're hitting it hard enough) then cut the centre off. Someone of them just don't move and you have to cut them

Mechanics generally go to a gas axe if hammers dont work ;)

its a toyota huh! are you replacing the CV, or the boot?

if its the boot, you can remove the inner CV and slide the boot down over the outer. if its the CV... as above. or pay someone

if you are pro with a gas axe you can cut the centre off without damaging the shaft

Have removed stubborn CV's by angle grinding the hell out of it.

done. big cutting disk for the cup & cage, dremel with small thin cutting disk for the rest.

slow and painful :x

yeah press is the way foward if your hammer is tooo weak :wink:

sounds like its pretty much welded its self to the hub
