ST180 Corona alternator/battery problem

Postby Al » Thu May 06, 2010 10:51 pm

Ok borrowing my little bro's ST180 Corona while the Clio has its radiator replaced, drove into town Wednesday and the Battery, Radiator and tail light warning lights flick on and off every now and then.

Didn't think much of it until the battery was flat today. Got auto sparky to look at it, and he pulled the alternator out and rebuilt it and off I went. Driving home a few hours later the lights came on again.... voltage regulator prob?

loose wire somewhere or the warning light wire is grounding out maybe ? the alternator grounds the warning light circuit from the dash to light all those lights you see, you say the alt was tested and repaired so it shouldnt be the voltage regulator, hmm now i think about it it could be a number of things, the sense wire for the reg from the battery could also be loose causing the alt to think its not charging hence grounding the warning light circuit.

check all wiring i rekon look for bad joins or insulation damage and wire touching the body where it shouldnt.

best diagnosis without seeing it of course ;)

hey, don't mean to dredge up an old thread, but I've just encountered the same problem with my ae101 trueno and was wondering if anyone could give me some suggestion as to possible problems.
Mine is only doing it while the engine is warm, and it is running as much as 20v while it is hot, but when I turn all of the peripherals on ie fan, rear demister, and full beam headlights then the lamps go out and the voltage remains below ~16v. Until it gets a little bit warmer then the voltage begins to creep up again.
on the drive home it has blown two of my headlight bulbs and not sure what other damage it has done to the battery etc.

probably a shorted rotor or a faulty regulator. but either way alt is faulty.

Would be careful as it could fry more stuff like stereo ecu etc etc.

Get it fixed.

yeah, i'm going to d/c the alt and try and make it to somewhere that i can get the alternator out. don't have a garage to work on it and being winter and all I'm not wishing to get caught out by a shower with the airbox/throttles assemby off.
