is it in the right way? i've not played with a 3sfe, but the 3sge/gtes have a slot in the end of the camshaft that is slightly offset, and i believe if you force it you can install it offset by 180 degrees.

you need a timing light to set the ignition timing

all you've got to do is clip the clampy bit over your #1 ignition lead, and the alligator clips to the respective battery terminals to power it.

you'll need to jumper TE1 (or T1) to E1 in your diagnostic connector to put the engine into diagnostic mode and so the timing will return to base timing

then start the engine (should start unless the timing is WAY on the piss) and let it idle. Point the timing light down at the crank pulley on an angle that allows you to see the timing marks on the lower cambelt cover. You should be able to see a notch in the crank pulley which should appear stationary due to the strobing of the timing light (if it's hard to see, I often put twink/white-out into the notch to make it stand out better). Anyway you want the notch to line up with the appropriate timing mark on the cambelt cover, usually 8-10 degrees is specified for 3s motors. Just rotate the distributor until you achieve this.

Remember to remove the wire you've got jumping the diagnostic connector and make sure you tighten the bolts on the distributor

if it doesn't start then pull the plugs out (so it cranks faster) but pop one into the #1 lead and hold it against the head so it will still spark (needs the current from the spark firing to trigger the timing light) and get someone to crank the engine while you check, just don't crank continuously (crank, see what the timing is, adjust, crank again etc)
