Failed WOF question

Postby Dirtbag » Fri Aug 06, 2010 6:59 pm

Hey guys, just failed yet another WOF on my Trueno (S/S)

The inspector said there was some play in both the front wheels, and he thinks it is, what he describes as "top outer suspension ball(joint)s".

Would these be the balljoints attaching the top of the hub to the strut? He didn't seem that eager to go into any details, and was quite short with me, when I started trying to get him to narrow it down, he just went back to his statement "there is play in both the wheels, and that's what I think it is".

Both the ball joints got replaced about 2/3 years ago when new struts went in, should they have worn out by now, or should I be looking somewhere else for the play?

Any help much appreciated :D

Yeah, I'd say it would be those joints, however I'd still get someone to rock the wheel around for you while you have a look at everything else around there as well. Odd that they'd wear out that fast, were they replaced with genuine parts?

Btw, out of curiosity, whereabouts did you go to get the wof?

TGP genuine from Revhead. With them being TGP, that's why I was a little surprised they would have worn out by now.

Oh okay, if they're that new and genuine.. I'd be very surprised if they were that worn!

I'd have a good look at number 1 and 2 arm joints and inboard bushes as well.

Great pic, but the top ball joint that he's talking about is the only thing not labeled, granted it isnt visible.

It's usually the figure 8/number one arm that gives trouble on these.

Yeah, my thoughts were with the figure 8 arm, or the banana arm. I've had problems with the banana arms in the past, haven't had to do anything to the figure 8 arms yet. (Touch wood)

No, you should be looking at your steering/suspension on your car, not anywhere else or anywhere on the www.
First shake'm to find out whether the play is top to bottom or side to side, or both, then look to find out specifically where it is coming from. Loaded or unloaded might make a difference.
If it isn't a known problem with a long history of happening to every car, can't guess, you gotta look for yourself.
