4AGZE swap questions

Postby Vertigo » Thu Oct 28, 2010 9:27 am

before I launch into my rebuild and swap, I have a couple of questions..

1) im intending to use the 4AGZE gearbox rather than my c50, which has seen better days.. i understand ill need to use the GZE axles also? which has me wondering, what other related components will i need to use? can i get away with using my c50 shifter linkages? is the speedo cable the same? etc etc

2) currently have a bigport 4AGE, '86 AW11, reckon the gze loom would mate with the 4AGZE one? note: its coming out of another AW11, but not sure what year, will ask about that..

3) is there anything else i have overlooked? i know ill need to swap from MAP to AFM, which means some mounts will need to be looked at, also the SC will need mount points made, especially as i dont intend to cut holes in my engine lid (if i dont need to, sweet).

4) secondary components. will i need the GZE fuel pump, or will the GE one do? will the GE one even work with the GZE loom/ecu?

any other helpful pointers would be greatly appreciated. this wont be my first rebuild (tho never got to drop it in in the end...), but will be my first engine swap. just to repeat, im replacing a bigport 4AGE in an '86 AW11 with a 4AGZE from another (year unknown at the mo) AW11.

Hey dude, I assume this is my engine you're talking about?

Its a ae101 4agze, and has a smallport inlet on it and no S/C gear - so you will need to procure the S/C setup in its entirety to run it S/C or start collecting bits for a turbo setup.

The gearbox is a c50 or c52 from an ae101, modified to use the aw11 shifter linkage (shifter arms are on the otherside of the box). It is not a 4AGZE gearbox.

There is no loom or ecu for it, so converting to map or what have you is moot since when you procure a ecu and loom you will get what you need. I would recommend picking up a G1 V3-5 link ecu, as these are becoming incredible bang-for-your-buck standalone options for basic engines like these.

Condition is unknown, I would strongly advise doing rings, bearings, inspecting the cylinder walls, gaskets, waterpump, cambelt etc.

You will need a better fuel pump.

oh good shit. can use my axles then. in fact, i could just replace my current gearbox as soon as it comes up. win.

debating with my mate whether or not to run it N/A low compression for a while, or just build it into a weapon to begin with and drop in. pros for the former is that itll be simpler to drop in and go. cons, itll be weaker than what i currently have, but that said, might be good to run it in after rebuild.

that rebuild parts list is what i had in mind, will recon the block and head thoroughly too. should be good fun, if a little $.
