sr20det fuel surging?

Postby GT4-Addict » Wed Nov 10, 2010 6:45 pm

Im looking at buying a nissan silvia, s14 facelift sr20det engine with aparrantly 130,000kms put in it (No reciepts so im being pretty cautious!)

it seems to run fine, i took it for a pretty good run, temperature didnt jump up at all, stayed about 1/3rd of the way up on the gauge, pulled really good on both 10psi and 14psi. it has a rattle on some downchanges, i think it is an exhaust rattle, but i am also wondering if it could be gearbox bearings?

Also after going for a good run, while it was idling its started to surge a bit, the fuel pressure regulator wasnt picking up any pressure change in the fuel supply, so im wondering what it could be? Im just worried about this as there is no reciepts garrunteeing the engine is only 130,000kms.

on another note, it sounds a bit clunky in the rear when you take off in first, and when its up on the hoist if you spin one rear wheel the other side spins at exactly the same rate. Im thinking this means the diff has been locked/welded?

Anyway, if anyone out there knows a thing or two about sr20dets, id greatly appreciate some advice about the surging!

be very worried - run for the hills - if the owner(s) cant complete the simple task of taking a receipt and sticking it in a shoebox or asking the previous owner for them - the same laziness has probably crept into the car

if you cant find any solid proof that the claimed work has been done via receipts leg it and dont look back - its not the last Silvia in the world and there will be one where the owner has kept a full service history for it so you know what you are getting

might sound a bit damning but ive seen too many friends buy cars in a rush (gimmie gimmie shell be right!) and have them fail and sit around as a doorstop for months till they can afford to fix them

Clunky diff could be just a tight aftermarket one, they dont feel too dissimilar to lockers.
Surge at idle could be a manner of things.
Unless the price is right, there are others out there, and if it doesnt have proof of the new motor, then it didnt happen.
1988 KE70 Wagon - Slowly rusting
1990 NA6 MX-5 - because reasons
2018 Ranger - Because workcar
1997 FD3S RX-7 Type R - all brap, all the time
OMG so shiny!

hunting at idle would either be vac leak or temp sensor problem.

clunk could be roooted factory LSD/ backlash not correctly set in diff

all the bad box bearings iv come across whine not clunk

I reckon i will leave it for now then, its not really exactly what im after,Its just a really cheap price (and you know what they say about deals that are to good to be true right?), and a great fun car to drive.

I think i will carry on with my original plans of finding a really nice st205 gt-four to replace my current st185 and get something i know i will be happy with

Well then the one I was going to mention is way out of your range.

regardless wether the car has receipts or not be very wary of buying a silvia in the first place

most people that own silvias treat them like shit anyway
The four seasons in Australia consist of "$&#$% it's hot", "Can you believe how $&#$% hot it is?", "I won't be in today because it is too $&#$% hot" and "Yes, the dinner plate size spiders come inside to escape from the heat."
