weird suspension noise

Postby bluemaumau » Mon Jan 10, 2011 4:55 pm

finally have the car running, but have a weird noise coming from the the front half.

situation:

daiyama adjustable suspension (ride height 1-2cm above 17inch tyres)
adjustable damper (30settings - set to 18)

the daiyamas do not come with a camber top hat, you must use the original top hats.

the noise sounds like the shocks are bottoming out/ springs are loose and bouncing around.

everything is tight , all bolts/nuts and springs have tension.

one thing worries me, although i cant see how its making this noise.
the top nut

the one that joins the top hat to the shock.
its like a 22mm nut with plastic inner (nylock???)

Once the thread comes up thru the nut, the nut just keeps spinning but the thread isnt travelling any further up.
(maybe something to do with the bearing in the top hat?)

i know the nuts not cross threaded cause it undoes fine when i take the shock out.

do i need to rattle gun this nut on?

the only things touched in the rebuild was the struts and hubs, crossmembers and sway bars havnt been touched and all look tight.

bit of a mish to diagnose over the net, but thought id give it a crack!

Is the shock located in the groove on the top hat? Does the coilover setup even have a part that locks it from turning in the top hat?

Standard shocks locate into the top hat and can't spin, so you can tighten it with socket set no worries. If its not locked in place from spinning, then yeah it might not be tight enough, which will make a knock when the suspension goes up and down. So if that is the case, you either need to check the shock shaft is located correctly in the top hat. Or if there is nothing on the shock to help it lock into place you'll probably just have to rattle it up tighter. The shaft of the shock is spinning when you are trying to tighten it more.

Worth a look anyway.

did the rattle gun, mint as now

wtf they were pretty sweet, not much more turn .

amazing how something being only a tiny bit loose can alter everything else so dramatically
