St195 error codes

Mate has a 1996 Caldina with a 7afe.

He's trying to narrow down a hesitation / running like crap situation that occurs @ around 2500rpm, and doesn't go away until you accelerate. He has checked all the basics, even injectors etc. So just wondering whats the method used to check the codes on this car?
