Under what conditions was the motor you saw being operated that threw a rod? A trip to the dairy with a few redline shifts along the way or something more punishing?

You can't say racing around the track is what they were intended for. Design flaw or not, they are for use on the road. And certainly do handle red line without a problem. There will always be the odd case of an engine going bang, no matter what type it is. But i'd say a lot will come down to the history of the motor. They don't really get looked after before they are shipped over here.

Taupo, old track. Yep knowing the full history of a particular engine is usually impossible, but as has been discussed before on this board, blacktops in factory configuration can break rods... know any other engines that are known to do that?

Don't get me wrong, I know the rods are weak. But driving to the dairy doesn't kill them. Otherwise there wouldn't be so many high km blacktops around. You abuse them too much with a lack of servicing, low oil (very common due to their appetite) and they can go bang. I've had mine 7 years now, and I don't nana it, ever. After a few years I was just kind of waiting for it to go bang as everyone goes on about the rods not being up to the job.

How many cases have you actually seen where the car was being operated in a way it was intended to be used, and it put a leg out of bed? By that I mean the car wasn't low on oil at the time and wasn't on a race track.

I've done a fair bit of looking at blacktops for parting, and more often than not, there is NO oil on the dip stick. How can you expect an engine to not go bang with no oil. I guess in the case of track time, it's possibly just oil starvation that starts the ball rolling. Who knows.

I don't know off hand any other engines that fail due to rods breaking. I do know some that are known to do the bearings, or some that are known for blowing head gaskets if that helps though.
