Smallport Piston to Valve Clearance...

Postby jondee86 » Sun Jan 23, 2011 10:40 am

Anyone ever bothered to measure the clearance between piston and
valves when the piston is at TDC and the valves are at full lift ??

Just wondering how much extra valve lift it takes to change the 16V
smallport from non-interference to an interference engine.

20v when i checked it was around 9mm.

Less valve lift leaves around 1mm clearance at full lift. Not 16v but its something.

If you are going for bigger cams dont go closer than .080inch (2.032mm) clearance on intake and .120inch (3.048mm) on the exhaust.

Yeah... was fiddling around yesterday, and noticed that If I had the
engine at TDC, and rotated the camshaft, there was some contact.
So it seems that adding 2mm of lift has made it interference ? I'll
check that tomorrow to be sure.

Not that it is a biggie. Full cam lift and piston at TDC does not happen
during normal operation. Only if you lose a cam belt and get unlucky.
