Non powersteering on a power steering rack (I want to remove

Postby Brawler » Wed Jan 26, 2011 11:21 am

Hey guys

So this is for my 81' celica xx

Its got a power steering rack, And in the past I ran my twincam engine without a power steering pump, I liked it quite a lot, and when i had my 1ggte The steering assist was far too strong and I couldnt feel the road.

So with my new engine Can i simply not hook up the power steering? Could I cause any damage by not using it?

You won't get a WoF with it disabled, to remove it properly you are probably best to grab a non powersteer crossmember and steering column and swap the lot over.

if you fill the rack to the top with PS oil and loop over the make sure there is always plenty of oil in there it won't do any harm.

but yea won't get a wof.

So if there was never a 'no power steering' option for your car, you can never really get a wof without the P/S hooked up?

Its fukin lame

i drove an ma61 around for 6 months with no ps belt, rack was fine.
id say you could just loop the lines, but then i guess you would want to remove the ps pump to save weight.

Most people wouldnt notice if its ps or not.

Yeah you won't have any issues if you remove the whole lot, although technically it may require cert. Thats why I suggested another crossmember and column (pretty sure the bottom of the powersteer column is shorter) as generally the rack mounts are different and means you can swap it all back if you want to later.

Had my 1GGE for about 2 months, loved the steering aye, was just looped i think.

The power steering from the 1GGTE was far too strong, I think due to the tankness of the MK3..

It will all depend on what the cert guy says

i wouldnt have thought that line pressure wouldve affected the feeling of the steering?

Infact im going to say it doesnt, due to me running a 7mgte power steering pump.

The steering in my car is really good and responsive. probably due to me having replaced all the suspension/bushes and tyres etc.

done the steering rack bushes? they are very worth while....

nope I have not done the bushes, What will I see out of new ones?

At the end of the day, the PS was still far too powerful, I would prefer without, and yeap If i remove it the pump won't be on the engine and Ill see about getting it certed.

Where'd you get the steering rack bushes from? Is ronnie still the man to see?

you will see/feel more direct steering response and the rack to stay in the correct place rather than moving around slightly.

Why not just run an over sized pulley on the PS pump?

in my experience most older cars have very similar racks between power and non-power, just one is assisted. so the non power racks have a similar 'weight' to the steering as the PS rack with no pressure in it. newer cars seem to have the reverse, PS rack with no pressure = way heavier than non-PS.

im a fan of PS personally
