Bigport head on Smallport block?

Postby Allister S » Tue Feb 15, 2011 1:05 pm

Hey,

Is this possible? Will this give me a Hicomp (10.3:1 or something) Bigport or a pile of trouble??

Will the engine be interferance now? Will it run with a std NZ Bluetop GE ECU (with 96 or 98 octane fuel)? I take it I will need to block the smallport oil drain on the block?

Thanks, Al

Yes it is possible. The compression will stay the same, pistons on 16V that make compression difference.
You will have to plug the oil drain tube on the back.
Although I done this very long time ago, so I don't remember details.

i think the OP means a smallport complete block? like pistons etc.

if so it will obviously give you a compression bump.

chambers, valves etc same. only ports that are different. so yes it will be same compression as smallport, and still be non interference.
i'd drill the head and use the drain.

i'l take the smallport head off your hands if you have one

Yeah, I meant to say that the using small port block will give you small port compression, as the chamber is of the same size.

Thanks guys.

So does anyone know if a NZ Bigport ECU will cope with smallport compression? Will the advance be to much and I'll get knock because of the compression - seeing as port velocities will be different with the Bigport head?

Anyone running a stock Bigport ECU on a higher compression bottom end? I've seen that Euro Bluetops ran 10:1 compression pistons anyway?

Will 98 fuel solve any of these issues?

Thanks, Al

NZ ECU will have different mapping for shittier fuel, so adding extra compression should not pose a problem as long as you don't run it on 91.

NZ ECU also doesn't have an oxy sensor, as we were still running leaded fuel around then.

My standard bluetop ECU is running on an 11.3:1 ish engine, and it works fine.

Yeah, the standard ECU will run a smallport with no probblems.

Are you getting a smallport shortblock or a complete longblock? If you have the chance to run smallport, do it! They're a much better head.

Yea, I think it was someone like redmist who actually took a bigport head a filled the inlets to be similar to a small port and had a lot of gains.
