christchurch is out of premium gas...

Postby Tagged » Fri Feb 25, 2011 10:35 pm

just a quick question, is it alright for me to fill up 91 gas for my 4A-GE engine?

I know its probably not very good to use 91 on high compression engines....but I don't really have much choice atm....

itll run fine, just wont run as well as premium

throw in an octane booster if your worried

for what its worth, BP in fendalton has 98 still, if you go at about 10pm, there are no lines etc.

It's no wonder there is no gas when people are driving around ALL DAY looking for gas.

Probably the only reason we ran out too, too many people rushing out to fill up as the world is going to end. No matter how many times they say on the news not to stockpile, you still see queues

You should run a modern high compression knock controlled engine on the highest octane fuel you can economically buy. With higher octane rating comes increased knock resistance, ECU will compensate over time by advancing timing, increasing power/reducing fuel usage. Plenty of tests have been done, running 95 will actually result in cheaper $/km in most cases.

Wouldn't bother in a 5k powered van but better fuel certainly isn't going to hurt it!

Went through a station the other day, only gas station for 90km and they had run out of 91. People would see the sign and rather just putting in some 95 they stormed off in a huff. All in modern (e.g '04+) cars which should have never been run on 91 in the first place

Lots of ignorance around fuel types

there obviously are reasons for higher octane fuel being better but a car will still run on 91

im assuming the car in question is pretty standard so its not going to make any difference to run cheap fuel for a few hundred kms

You should run with the LOWEST octane that's compatible with your engine & driving, as anything higher is just wasted & does nothing for performance or engine life/longevity.
Yes, knock sensor be good, really good with an open exhaust when you can't hear the detonation.
If you wanna have the most performance you can get from octane & advanced ignition timing, or you're someone who likes to accelerate from 2000-2500rpm in 3-4-5 gear, then the engine will need the higher octane.

Will pink like a bitch on 91 and you will notice the rougher running.
They need the timing knocked back to run ok on 95
