Can you get bearings off an AE86 axle without wrecking them?

Firstly how do you get them off?? Im guessing they are pressed on and I need to get the cover flange thingy which is between the hub and bearing.

Also as they are so freaken expensive it would be nice to reuse them on my new facelift axles....

I don't see why you couldn't re-use them.

There is a retaining collar that holds the bearing in place. This is heated so it expands then pressed on...with a press. When it cools down, it really $&#$% on there. You have to grind through the collar, being really careful not to damage the axle(half shaft) or the bearing.

You will still need to take the half shaft to someplace with a press to get the bearing off. The bearing is also pressed on, but it's not as tight as the retaining collar.

I'd say if you straight out press the bearing off you'll likely fcuk it. When I put the bearings on my axles, we used an induction heater on the bearing, so it pretty much fell on.

Are the bearings on there nearly new?

Unless I knew they were in "as new" condition i'm not sure i'd bother trying to reuse old shit. Though if the budget is tight.... then I guess you have no choice.

They are scarily dear though, SKF quoted me $150+ each for them

how is that scarily dear? anyone with an ae86 is used to paying out the ring piece for small bits of plastic and little metal brackets, something as large and as useful as a wheel bearing is surely worth a fortune

Cause I'm used to paying $30 for wheel bearings but yeah I guess to those in the 86 scene, $170 doesnt get you much
Oh, and that bearing was trade priced obviously, retail would be more, and Toyotas price on the bearing was something ludicrous.

Try smacking across the collar with a big cold chisel and big hammer along the same line as the axle, with the bottom of the collar supported in a vice, 90 deg apart. Seem to remember doing that years ago to remove collars on Mk3 Cortina axles.
