Supspension problem continuing...

Postby TRD_ZERO » Sun Mar 13, 2011 10:50 am

OK so what my spring and shock combo is TRD superstrut springs purchased from toyota(with a warning saying the previous owner returned them having bottoming out issues in the front)TRD damper adjustable shocks no leaks seems good.

Now the shocks dont bounce back which ive been told is correct as they are oil shocks and are damper adjustable and mainly control the upward rate of the strut (correct me if im wrong as im just going on what ive been told and what i understand).
Once i put the car back on the ground the whole front bottoms out. It feels like it sits on the bump stops. There is no movement in the front ( the rear is fine). If the shocks are designed not to really have any downward resistance then its the springs job to hold the front up, right? If its bottoming out that means the spring is not doing its job.

Is the spring faulty? Is it common for newish spring or just springs in general to just fail. Is the spring shock combo incorrect? Does that spring need to be fitted with a gas shock to help downward resistance. Do i need a harder springs in the front.

Or is the spring just faulty and i need new front springs?

Sorry for bringing this up again but ive pulled the suspension out so many times now im just trying to gather advide before i do another round of spring changes.

I am unable to work on the car right now as it is in storage and want to hear what you guys have to say before i get the chance.

Shocks should push by hand, the spring is what holds it up, so IMO, the spring is your problem. Doesn't quite seem right though.... :?

Got any photos of the old / new springs etc, do they look similar?

generally speaking a shock should be approx twice as hard to extend as it is to compresse it (by hand).

it is the springs job to hold the car up (off the bumpstops) if your car is already sitting down on them then either your springs are all wrong for your car or they have issues.

its not common for a new spring to just fail, how ever it isnt unheard of as in new parts being faulty off the shelf...the fact that the previous owner returned them with the same complaint would point to an issue with them.

double check the part numbers for the shocks and springs and make sure they are correct for your car

Yeah sounds about right. Ill have to just replace the springs in the front by the sound of it. Do i just get a set of custom ones made up?
How much does it cost to get them made up?

Or buy new ones off the shelf?

Check part numbers and specs. Sounds like you have the wrong parts. The won't be faulty off the shelf, but they could be wrong parts in the box.
Have you checked to make sure you have correct bump stops and not ones that are too long?
