Anyone got a car with speedo cable/cruise control?

Postby RomanV » Tue Mar 22, 2011 3:18 pm

Hey all,

Just wondering if anyone out there has got a car which has both a factory speedo cable, and cruise control.

I hear that they've effectively got a speedo drive that has both an electric output, and a cable.

I saw a GX71 today at pickapart which had an adaptor type piece that goes in between the speedo drive and the cable, which orients it 90 degrees different.

Was wondering if cruise control equipped cars had this same piece, but with an additional output on them.

The E series boxes in the SC AW11's also have the 90deg direction change for the speedo cable - no electrics involved. Not sure why it's there - could just be a hangover for space reasons from the front drivers that the box also goes into as the Cxx boxes don't have it.
See ya

My levin had cruise control - the mechanical speedo cable ran to the dash, then an electronic signal went from the dash to the cruise control computer (as far as I can tell)

Most of toyota EFI cars that have cables also have electronic pulse output (from speedo) that goes into ECU (will be labeled SPD inside of ECU if it has labels).

As far as I remember it is just a reed switch inside the speedo unit.

My MR2 has a speedo cable and cruise control. No adaptor gizzmo. Speedo cable goes to dash - dash sends electric speed signal to cruise control box.

When I had my speedo cable unplugged at the gearbox end, cruise control didn't work either.

There's an AE92 FX-GT at Pick a Part Avondale that came in yesterday that has factory cruise control. First one I've seen with cruise control. It's a 1991 (last of that shape) so it was either an OEM feature or an optional extra.

Then you hear wrong.

You can get adapters that go inline in a cable between the box and the cable,
but they are not factory.

Ther are also quite a few different types of adapters for angles but they dont have an electronic part.

And most cruise controls will be feed speed from a reed sw in the speedo head.

I'm aware that a lot of modernish (early 90s) cars with cable driven speedo drives have a signal generated from the dash, back to the ECU for SPD signal.

With the adapator thing I got from pick a part today, once I pulled the back off, it's just an angled flexible cable inside it, not geared or anything. So no way you could have two outputs off it.

Here's the information that I'm going off, and why I bring up cruise control....

If you dont have a SPD signal from the head unit, there is a very simple fix. Im not 100% sure if you all got it in NZ but here in the States, the 91-92 SW20's had a seperate speed sensor for the cruise control. We never seemed to figure out why toyota did it as it is redundent when the car already has a SPD signal from the head unit... Either which way, you can probably get one from the states for pretty cheap if they weren't used in NZ...

It goes between the speedo driven gear output on the trans and the cable (Threads on the the drive unit then the cable threads on to it)... It'll have 3 connects (+12v power, ground, and signal) obviously, +12v to ign. power supply, ground to chassis ground and the signal to the SPD signal pin at the ECU and problem solved....

The unit works pretty much the same as the magnetic REED Switch's in the Speedo head unit, but its electrical instead of mechanical (obviously).

93 and later cars all had electronic speedos the VSS (Vehicle speed sensor) opperates different on these. The VSS outputs a +12v digital pulsed signal. The ECU's including the Cruise Control, Enigne ECU, and P/S ECU (if you have speed sesitive powersteering) all look for a negitive pulse (pulsed ground). The Speedo Head unit conditions the signal (inverts it) for the ECU's to recieve the proper signal......

Must be american only.

Part number for it is 88261-20070
Google the part number for images.

I am actually looking for one identical for our celica,
but we have them as Isuzu Speedo transducer replacements.
Ordered a couple today and should be here at the end of the week.
