My mates little run about has a problem when its cold it idles its tits off, once it warms up it goes away...

I think it may be an auto choke sticking or a heat sensor that turns on the idle up when its cold.

anyone got a suggestion what to look at/replace?

The cable has been looked at and its all the way out so cant just correct it there..

Take carb. Throw carb in bin.

Replace with random used carbs until you find one that works better.

Pick a part for the win.

Ultimately, it's probably a POS car anyway (I'm assuming), so as long as it works, that's about all you tend to worry about.

Previously had an EE90 with all sorts of such issues.

I had this exact problem with a 1991 Diahatsu Applause. Tried all sorts of things to get it going right again. Turns out the was the radiator cap was stuffed and it wasn't pressurising the water system properly. It wouldn't push the hot water into the auto choke to shut it off. It would idle at 3k until normal running temp and the engine would also run on even with the key out and 2 spark plug leads off. Now it idles at 2k when cold and as soon as the temp needle starts to rise it goes to 1k.

The 2E carbs are legendarily bad for getting their panties in a bunch, and misbehaving.
