cambelt questions

hey guys, have done a search but couldnt find anything helpful.

my car (1992 fxgt, 4age silvertop) died last night and im pretty sure the cambelt has snapped. was just coasting along at about 40-50 kph, under no load.

A couple of questions;

1) from peoples experiance, what would be an approximate cost to repair this? i.e. since engine is "free spinning" does that mean there likely is no damage to engine? so just the cost of replaced belt?

2) can anyone recommend someone to do this job who is good and cheap, with probably more emphasis on the cheap :oops:

Approximate cost will depend on if your engine is interference or non-interference. If its interference expect its going to cost more. A normal cambelt service is usally around $500. But given this won't be a normal service you'll need to purchase tensioner, belt, harmonic balancer, etc. I'd also suggest water pump and get your accesory belt done at the same time.

If you want more accurate quotes, probably best to ring your local mechanic and ask for labour. Contact 1I1 on the forums and ask him for prices for Toyota parts for it, he'll see you right ;)

won't have done any internal damage as silvertop is non interferance.

iirc cambelts aren't very expensive but it will probably pay to get the cambelt kit that inlcudes a water pump, tensioner, idler pulley etc that should be replaced when doing a cambelt. i think the kit is somewhere in the vicinity of $200ish. best to get hold of our sponsor mark at manuwatu toyota he always has a good price and will sort you out for what you need.

as for getting the job done, can do it yourself easily with the repair manual in hand if you have 4-5hrs free for first time. only need basic tools and access to a torque wrench to make sure everything is torqued correctly.
only tricky bit is getting the crank pulley off which is easiest undone by a rattle gun.

if you work that out for what a mechanic will charge, 3hrs labour + $200 (approx) parts ~$500 for the job give or take a bit.

But yeah, cambelt jobs on AE101's are pretty simple. Genuine belt is something like $38+? Definitely do idler bearing, water pump and seals too. Before you buy bits though, take off the cam gear cover and visually check that the belt has snapped.

And the belt might not have physically snapped but stripped teeth off so it might look OK at first glance. Try turning it over with the covers removed if it's still in one piece. If it doesn't move when cranking the teeth are stripped, usually on the bottom drive pulley behind the crank pulley.

would this be the easiest way to see if its snapped (or stripped teeth)? so its just take the cam cover and the belt cover to the side off? theres no inspection window or anything like that is there?

Also do the rubber hose from water pump to pipe while you are there.
It's a real PITA to get to other wise and they do fail.

Yes, was gonna mention that....both my Trueno and Levin needed those doing, and they're a right PITA to do with the pump on.
