Using a petrol tacho on a deisel?

I'm told that you can pretty much use any tacho on anything as they just run off the alternator?

I'm wanting to put this on my boat which has a 2 cylinder diesel - the alternator has a tacho output....

Wanting to use something like this as it has volts as well...

Apparently this tacho can be triggered off the alternator

We have them in stock at work, not sure where they come from or what they are worth? have not fitted one in years.

Ok so the tacho I have has a switch for 3, 4, 6, or 8 cylinder operation

Running it off the alternator the lowest I could with the dip switches on the rear of it was reading about 4,500rpm when the engine was idling at about 600rpm....

Bugger - was really hoping to use this tacho as it has a volt meter on it which is quite crucial to know what the batteries are doing....

Yeah thought about something like that - but just not so keen on cutting odd sized holes lol
