Clutch Replacement for 2001 Fielder Z - Mechanic Suggestions

Postby FeetSteez » Wed May 11, 2011 1:20 pm

Hi All

As per my intro post, long time reader/rookie addition to the forums.

Had my car tested the other day and the only issue needing attention was a slipping clutch hence the need for replacement. It's not super-bad at this stage but will look into getting it replaced within the month hopefully.

I'm therefore looking for suggestions on reliable mechanics that can do the job for me/source the required parts. I have called a few places and had the following rough estimates:

- Toyota Albany: quoted $950 for an "upgraded" Exedy clutch kit, the flywheel machining, and labour;
- Quay St Autos: rough estimate of $600-700 including flywheel machining and labour;
- 2 other places gave estimates of $1000 and upwards.

With members' experiences:

(a) what should I expect to be paying for this kind of service?; and
(b) what are the best options? (including in-house suggestions).

I'm not after anything heavy duty, but would be interested in paying for an upgraded kit if the price was reasonable and worth it in terms of price/performance parity.

Many thanks in advance, I understand this is a fairly long-winded post but thought it would be best to get out as much info as possible.

Cheers

Ray

I hope there's someone on here willing to do it for cheaper than that?

I've got a exedy heavy duty clutch, but my cars not exactly standard. If you just drive the car normally, there's no reason to get an uprated clutch.

$1000 seems pretty expensive for what should be a 3-4 hour job?

The exedy clutch kit itself should only cost between 2-$300
Flywheel machining - $50
Main Seal- $30

Why do you need a heavy duty clutch?

From my experience Toytoa clutches should easilly last upwards of 150kms easy. On this basis I'd go with a factory replacement.

Thanks for the responses so far.

As above, I'm not looking for anything heavy duty in particular. The Toyota mechanic only had the exedy clutch kits available for my model which he explained was a pretty standard kit but added about 15% more durability etc.

Just after something that has a good feel and is reliable (and relatively cheap!).

Can you ask him to show you his clutch durability measurement tool? :P

Pretty common kit to run out of!!! (I'm assuming it's a 1zz engine?)

Haha yeah my thoughts exactly. I asked him whether he had anything stock standard/cheaper and he gave me the long answer to no.

Engine is 2zz.

$600-700 is a pretty decent price.
My dads shop would charge around the same price, the clutch you would get with my dads shop is normally 30% more clamp than the stock pressure plate. They use a reputable clutch supplier.

The $700 mark seems about right. Toyota are about the best price for the majority of their clutches so I wouldn't even bother with aftermarket ones too

yeah TGP are pretty competitive on a lot of that service type stuff.

6-700 is a fair price, to get it cheaper you'll be looking for someone to do a home job or something.

That Exeedy kit with the HD clamping kit and the full face organic clutch disc is a really nice kit, if you can get it for around $350 go for it, thats about trade price for such kit, otherwise they retail $600+ then forget it.

Toyota quoted you $950 thats retail on the clutch and $100 an hour labour.

Stink guys eh
