W5* vs J160 vs T50

The T50 in my SA60 has 300k kms on it and is a little tired. I'm tossing up options for replacement.


As I see it:

T50
-Cheapest and easiest would be another T50, bolt straight in for $200 odd
-It's an old box and wouldn't be particularly helpful with any potential future 3SGE swaps

W5*
-Bellhousings to bolt to S series do exist, the starter is on the correct side (I think) and is much stronger than the T50
-Cost around $400 for the box alone and would require adjustment of the drive shaft and quite likely the shifter position

J160 (altezza 6spd)
-Comes with S series bell, is 6 speed, can be had for $400-500
-Most difficult to install? I know the shifter position is quite far back, I've been told that the starter is on the intake side (can anyone confirm?) and I suspect may not not reach the 1S flywheel. What else?

Id go another t50. Easy and bolts straight in. Unlikely to lose much resale value if you swap it out later. yep starter on the intake side for 6 speed. W series box usually has starter on exhaust side which is gay. Need custom cross member for 6 speed and cut shifter hole a bit. altezza flywheel has the spigot bearing in the flywheel instead of crank, so input shaft would be too short unless using flywheel to suit.

BAHAHA $200 for an S to W bellhousing?

Is it carved out of an elephants skull or something?

I had heard (may be wrong) that the 6 speeds in the Altezza suffered from the same weakness as the BZR 6 speeds?


I'm quite happy for people to think this, if it means I can buy them for cheap 8)

Y or C series bell housings will fit a 3s engine with small mods and can be bolted to a W5* gearbox
Y series bell housings have the starter on the intake side

if you're using the 1s or 2s engine then the w55 is a no brainer. I have personally seen factory fitted sa60(61?) 1s-w55. think shifter was in the front position like found in ma61. that $1 reserve bell on trademe looks like the same sa60 bell. 1c -2c is same bell too.
when you go changing to 3s block, thats when the spigot, flywheel, starter, 1s-w5# bell thickness etc mods need to be thought about to get starter and spigot bearing length correct.
two piece driveshaft means you could possibly just swap the front half for the w5# splined yolk from another A6 w5# celica/carina regardless of diff size. sa60 w5# clutch fork is the bent type which is the most common type found in fwd vans. pics and info on clutch fork types are in the toyspeed tech FAQ.
Y series bell needs the top bolt hole slotted from memory and still require spigot bearing/input shaft length mods. bell commonly found in the toyota Y powered van with a G52 box behind it. clutch slave needs to be moved to intake side.

All of the above is true, but it's also potentially a load more work and more parts than just another T50 + use existing bell housing, if he's unlikely to break a T50 anyway.

Some great info there!

I think I'll keep a watch on the $1 auction and see how that goes, just for the sake of having it if I want it.

As Roman said, if I want to sell a T50 later it's unlikely to devalue, and I'm very unlikely to break it. I think that's a go-er for now. Especially when I should just be putting up with being unable to shift down into 1st/2nd and finishing my 85 :oops:

Sweet, scored that bell for $37 8) Storing for future use. Maybe 3sfe from townace noah?

I dont know anything about gearboxes. My t50 doesn't really crunch 1st -> 2nd but is a real bitch to shift down to either 1st or 2nd. A guy i was talking to said said something about the collars? Is that something easily/cheaply fixed if i crack open the box?

Yes. because it was th diff that let go in the C series 6speed.

it's the SR40 liteace noah that has a manual rwd 3sfe option. The only rwd 3s that I know of? not sure which box is behind it though but i'd assume a W or G series (same bolt pattern). the SR50 noah were all auto according to toyodiy.
