4agze idler pulley replacement - alternatives?

Postby Hachiroku » Mon Aug 01, 2011 10:13 pm

The two drive belt idler bearings on my 4agze are stuffed and I'm not keen to pay Toyota price for new ones. Has anyone here successfully adapted a pulley off something else? Does the diameter of the pulleys make any difference other than belt length i.e. can I use smaller ones?

with the pulley kits I do I normally use a 4age cam belt tensioner with a 3mm spacer behind it
i remove the spring tensioner bracket to tidy them up.

they are a smaller diameter so a shorter belt would be required

Repco have a catalogue with new idlers in them. Quite a few different ones. Thy're around 80 - 90 bucks each i think. Not too bad. Or try fensport uk. They do a great range for the gt4s and im sure for other cars as well.
The GT4 is to Celicas what the GTR is to skylines.

Why don't you replace the bearing in the idler? of course it has to be the type that you can replace bearing.

No, bearing isn't replaceable unfortunately and can't find anything in Gates catalog to match. evil_si - is that the standard 16v tensioner with the slotted hole?
