Hey I'm new to W series gearboxes so just have a couple of questions I was hoping some of you fellow forum members could answer please.
I'm looking for a gearbox upgrade for my 2TGEU as I just have a standard 20 spline T50 at present.
I'm building the motor / box setup for racing so am looking for a close ratio box to help my motor.

1. Are some of the W boxes close ration from factory?
2. Do toyota make a 6 speed W box?
3. What gearbox is the 6 speed that is in the alteeza ie what is its designation.

My plan was hopefully to get a 3tgte bellhousing (it should fit my 2tg) off a W box, and match it to a 6 speed box.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Don't know much about the W series, but here is a bit of info on the altezza 6speed which might help.

Gearbox:
Model: J160
From: 1998-2002 Toyota Altezza 3sge SXE-10
Weight: 41kg
Six Speed

Bellhousing
Intergrated type bellhousing to suit 3S engine

Ratios
Reverse: -3.672
1st: 3.874
2nd: 2.175
3rd: 1.484
4th: 1.223
5th: 1
6th: 0.869

And 90% sure input and output shaft splines are the same as the W series

W58 is the closest ratio W series AFAIK, but certainly not crazy close

No, Though I daresay you could spend the coin and get 1. combined with 2. :lol:

J160, and as stated, integral bellhousing so would have to make up an adaptor plate to fit it to a T motor.

Good to see some old school cars in good hands.

Probably the best W series box is the W57... same ratios as the W58 1st to 4th gear but 5th gear is much closer to 4th than the W58 one.

Start with getting your 2T motor hotted up then worry about changing gearbox!

For the $ you would spend on a 6 speed box adapted to the T motor.
You'd be better off spending $ on your engine (cams etc)

6 speed bolts up to the T series, but not the 3S version. You need the one off the 1G-FE powered Altezza.

How common are the 1G 6 speeds in NZ? I dont know of many of the 6 cylinder altezzas coming to NZ. Would anyone know of any laying around?? Sounds like the way to go.

They are pretty common, not as common as the 3s but still alot of them on the road, known as AS200, so imagine shouldnt be too hard to track one down

Nice, dont see many 6 speed 6 cylinders around - would imagine they'd go well with a manual.

The one we were looking the the other day was a 6 speed 6 cylinder manual wagon or Altezza gita.

Or is it a myth?

Check www.Toymods.org.au, a couple of cars there running the 6 speed on T series engines and a few others running G bellhousings on T motors. The Toyman75 is running one in his TA22 with turbo 2TG, and Grega is running a G bell on his T series I think.

Not all the holes line up but most do. I think you slot one bolt hole or leave the bolt out, also puts clutch fork on passenger side from memory.

Aha - thanks for that.
I just asked because I remember ages ago I did a comparison and they were different...
Sort of like the Toyota V6 engines bolting up to S engine gearboxes for MR2 conversione. 3 out of 4 bolts line up.

I can confirm that to be true, I had a W50 with a 3T bellhousing runing behind my old 1ggte,
