diesel inboard question. marine

Postby gleem » Mon Nov 14, 2011 10:12 pm

looking at purchasing a boat and really keen on diesel inboards for low running costs. Looked at 7 or so now and all the others on trade me. Why are all the engines all most prehistoric in design etc. I couldnt find one that has a good modern ish motor. Is it not common to upgrade to a mid 90s car motor in boats. any ideas? thanks

cause it's like that, and thats the way it is.....

alot of the yamaha 6 cylinder diesels are just marinised 4.2 cruiser motors. but in the 4 cylinder range its generally old school stuff. i have heard of a number of 1kzte being put into boats, and they use a 14BT injector pump on them to keep it all mechanical.

+1 on that..... a marine conversion on the average 90's diesel would cost way more than the engine, so people don't do it!

The Nissan LD engines do seem to feature in marine conversions quite heavily though - I'm picking that Nissan may have done a production run of marinised versions.

Basically most of the older boats feature primitive engines solely because there was no alternative. These days a lot of people that come in for propellers have done conversions to Yanmar marine motors, so I'm picking they're pretty low cost, though Volvo Penta is still a popular choice, and John Deere have just released a new range of marine 4s.

Did repairs on a pair of 27 x 25.5 props last week that live off the back of 650hp Cats... THOSE are modernish engines!

And the fact that if you're 20kms from dry land the last thing you want is an ecu failure :)

I realise the injection should be kept mechanical, but what is marinising? I was assuming youd have to do some Custom fitting to get it to bolt to whatever they bolt to

Marinisng refers to how an engine is setup for marine application,

The Cooling system is very different to automotive, and utilises a heat exchanger, raw water pump, anodes,

Exhaust manifolds and turbo exhaust housings are water cooled

Basically the raw water pump sucks from outside the boat, pumps it thru the heat exchanger ( fluid to fluid marine radiator ) which cools the engine coolant, it then exits thru the exhaust manifolds to the sea again,
Anodes are fitted in the cooling system as sacrificial blocks (There is always stray electrical current and the different metal reactions eat away marine engines badly,)

water cooled manifolds keep the engine room temps down and gets

There are also plenty of engine manufacturers that make electronic diesels for marine use,

will go have a look at this this week

25hp sounds pathetic for a 20foot steel boat. I really have something personal about primitive engines so a 2cyl isuzu form 1981 would have to go.

Wow, never seen such an ugly boat  What is it actually designed to be used for? Apart from going slow and getting laughed at.

Just remember any engine can be converted to mechanical fuel injection...

What size boat/hp motor do you want (forgetting about engine types for a bit)
