Threadlocking (Loctite) for bulkhead fitting

Postby MrOizo » Sun Jan 15, 2012 7:51 pm

Hey people,

Looking at using some Loctite or similar product to help the nut on my bulkhead fitting from coming loose in the fuel tank.

Some people on forums have suggested Red Loctite and that seems to work. Is this fuel safe?

What are other suggestions for keeping the thread locked while in a fuel tank?

Cheers.

Put a second bulkhead nut on to act as a locking nut. I think just about any sealant will be stripped away by petrol eventually.

The more i use the more the teflon washers (top and bottom of bulkhead) want to distort and push away from the flanges.

I thought that might be the story with thread sealant but surely there is a fuel safe one? Could double nut. will see if there is room :o

Cheers guys.

Loctite 242 (blue) is fuel tolerant if allowed to cure properly.

According to the specs;

100% strength after 500hrs immersed in unleaded fuel @22°C, 95% at 1000hrs. Leaded fuel is 100% after 1000hrs, unleaded contains a greater % of solvents so it's a bit harsher.

Loctite 567 is made to withstand petrol. I've used it on fuel lines/FPR stuff with good results. Having said that though, having petrol flowing through a union with an external thread with loctite on is a different thing to having the thread submerged in petrol and allowed to soak in over time. Try it and see?

567 is a sealant, not a thread locker. It's also less fuel resistant that 242, only retaining 80% strength at 1000hrs

Adrian - I've got several different sorts of loctite... Remind me to look before I go to work tomorrow morning.
Might be cheaper to get another nut if you need to buy a bottle of loctite.

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!
