wastegate clearence issues

Postby steroidcontaskie » Mon Apr 02, 2012 10:13 pm

Hi all,

My wastegate is touching the top lip of the engines sump, I can grind off some of the fins on the top of the wastegate, will give me about 5mm of clearence. Is this going to be enough? or will I need to space out the whole manifold? And If I do space it out, what would be the minimum clearence I would need?

Cheers Edward

Im not sure how much you have done already but if its not too late, I would suggest having the WG flange cut off the manifold and reorientated/welded so that the WG's exit is actually facing the downpipe so its easier to plumb back.

This will also obviously cure the problem you have now too.

Sorry that another curve ball has befallen you :(

I did manage to put some mesh on my bumper, so the weekend wasnt a total waste. And we all know that ladies love the mesh.

The wastegate flange has already been recut and re orientated so it plumbs directly into the downpipe (say per your suggestion on club na-t :D )

I think what has happened is that during the re welding the flange moved and warped and after the re machining of the manifold faces the wastegate has been shifted about 10mm closer to the sump ( the clearence was only 10mm during the mock up).

I guess that I am not too keen to re cut and re weld again, as it will probably cause the flange to warp and it may also move. If I can get away with just trimming off the touching surfaces I would prefer that.

I dont think there is much flex in the system, there is not flexi in the system, it is a hard pipe from the wastegate to the downpipe like yours build had.

I just dont know how much you would expect it to move about. It might be that it wont move at all, but I just don't know.

Guess I could just suck it and see, and if the trimming doesnt work then take it to an exhaust place and get them to sort it out.

Thanks for all your imput, Once the soarer is running I will have to take it for a road trip and pop in to say hi.

Cheers
Edward
