4age Rwd gearboxs

Postby mlewis » Tue Apr 10, 2012 11:03 pm

Mate of mine is wanting to put a 4age and a rwd gearbox into his project car. What are his options to which gearboxes he can use? he's turning the 4age into a carbie so along as the gearbox can handle 200hp thats plenty. His putting it into a morris 10 1936 and he's a welder so fab work isn't a major. Any help is much appreciated

He will need a T50 with an A series bellhousing, which is hydraulic clutch.
The bellhousing is removable, so he can buy them separately.
There is one of trademe for $800!

Or a K50 from an A series engine, which is cable clutch. Apparently does not handle as much power as the T50.
There is one on trademe for $500...

There is also a K50 for the K series engine, but it will be useless. AFAIK the bellhousing is integral to the gear box.

Or he can get a W55 supra gearbox and a $700 custom bellhousing....

If he is SUPER keen he could probably make an adapter plate to mate any gearbox to the engine.

I've used a T50 a W55 and a W58. T50 didn't like the torque of a 4agze (although it was from 1983!).

Carb'd 4age would be working pretty hard to make 200hp but a T50 should be fine because it'll have no torque to deal with.

I've even heard of Ford 'Type 9' sierra 5 speeds behind 4age's actually. But that's in England where they'd be really common.

yea i know 200hp is far fetched from a carbie but was just a power guess, if the gearbox handles that then will be more then enough. have seen a w50 on trade me that could b good for 50bux, will def rebuild it lol. Ive only dealt with fwd 4ages, but giving him a hand with the project. anyone have any of the gearboxes for sale? and even an old 4age they maybe busted in need of attention

Add a $650+ custom (A series block to W series gbox) bellhousing to that too, also need a driveshaft yoke to suit W5* plus modify/make a driveshaft to suit.

Brings back memories of money sunk into my old AE86

w50 may be from a hilux, unsure if they will suit due to 4wd transfercase etc.

W50 has a very different bolt pattern pattern to the other W5 boxes, so the custom bellhousing will need customising to fit

A series K50 will shit itself after being driven in anger, $500 is silly money for one. I see A series T bellhousings have plateaued around $250 now too.

i dunno, K series boxes seem to handle a bit of stick in the right hands. $500 is madness though.

T series seem to be fairly robust, i seem to recall nick teeboon not using too many with his turbo 4age drifter

once again is prob down to the driver as well. hear of them breaking behind standard 4ages, so yeah.

realistically he will be making about half that much power, so i would certainly go with the T50 myself, if only for ease of installation etc. just buy it and bolt it on.
