ok, in a mad rush to try and get my fix..............Joe might have Fooked up.

genuine worst case scenario replies only please.

i may or may not have installed a 22spline T40 without the thrust spacer between input shaft bearing and thrust bearing snout.
the old box (roller bearing) still has his one, but i don't remember one on the replacement box (ball bearing).

car only has to do 60-70km.

3T on 40's (130-ish HP)
4.8:1 welded diff
on gravel, apart from a quick squirt up the road to make sure it selects all gears.

not sure on T40's, but I know it was only one of the T50's which had the spacer - may have been the 22 spline model.

As for running it without the spacer, I managed to get about 500km out of my box before the movement on the input shaft ended up chewing one of the synchros (IIRC) out... ended up not being able to select gears. Towed the car home and pulled the box out, ended up rebuilding it as it had metal shavings through all the oil... spun a spacer up on the lathe before I reinstalled it and it was fine ever since.

it is the ball bearing type i fitted yeasterday. i have the roller bearing box on my bench, so can measure how much it protrudes from the face of the housing.

bearing race width - 16mm

with the input shaft sitting in case, bearing race protrudes 5mm

cheers man. had a good ol' chat with Sheldon Rush today and he thoroughly recommended removing box and making sure the was a spacer installed.

45mins had it on the bench, bell housing off............. including 10 mins cleaning gear oil off ratchet after i dropped whilst still draining.

FYI, did you know that gear oil slows a ratchet down quite considerably.

appearently, yes. the forward thrust on the imput shaft "could" cause catasthrophic failure.

but then the lucky dip box could also fly to bits one the start line of the first run, but trying to reduce the risks
