1998 Caldina GT - Speedo and Tacho keep dying

Postby darkwolf » Tue Oct 25, 2011 9:45 pm

Hi all,

As the subject suggests the tacho and speedo seem to just stop working and a CEL lights up. Haven't had a chance to check the diagnostics yet as each time it happens the car is nowhere near the mechanics or home.

Has anyone else experienced this. Stays this way for a random period of time. I'm picking it will be a speed sensor in the gearbox but then why the CEL? I don't know if the 3S-FE has a cam position sensor or similar, but if it was dicky wouldn't it cause other issues? Doesn't appear to be a cluster issue as fuel and temp gauges continue to work.

I unfortunately can't give much more information as the car is my parents and they live in Morrinsville, I'm in Christchurch.

Engine is 3S-FE and its an auto.

From memory this is a cluster issue and a component needs to be re-soldered onto the board.

So whereabouts am I looking for the component? If I pull the cluster out is it pretty clear or will I need to look for something specific.

No idea sorry, but from memory its an surface mount so requires a bit of skill to solder back on.

Dash out and apart. A lot of them you can actually hear the component rattling around.

I had one doing exact same thing at work a few weeks ago.

Took me a while to find the post but I knew I had seen it on here.

Turns out it's in the FAQ section.

As above, ours occasionally does this, haven't yet dealt with it

Sidenote: you sure you have a 3sfe? GT should be a single vvti beams 3sge

Dead sure its a 3S-FE.

Not so sure its the GT :) I pay very little attention to it as its not my cup of tea and I live 1,000KM from it. But I can spend hours looking at engines

I don't mean to drag up old posts, but I'm trying to look for info on carrying out a diagnostics test on a 1998 Caldina (3SFE).

Is there anywhere I can find Error codes and how to do it?

Thanks in advance.
