ST185 GT4 - Speedo & Temp Gauge Problems

Postby DriftMonkey » Sat Dec 22, 2012 5:16 pm

Hi,

Me and my Dad have just bought a heap of shit ST185 GT4 for me to drive around while I'm back from Australia. Paid $1600 so we weren't expecting much.

First up, the Speedo doesn't work at all. It's a JDM Type A model, so has a sensor-driven speedo (is this correct?). I haven't been able to find the sensor to check it yet (need to get myself a jack and some axle stands), but are there common causes for this? Is it likely that the sensor is just buggered?

Secondly, the Temperature gauge goes straight to maximum after you turn the car on and drive 50m down the road. This only happens from dead cold, if you've driven somewhere then restarted the car it goes directly to maximum as soon as the car is started. And by max, I mean way past the red zone as far as the needle can go. The previous owner said this has always happened. It doesn't seem like it's overheating, and there's no bubbles in the coolant when the car is running.

Potential causes for the temperature gauge problems that I can think of:

- Sensor is buggered so readings are false.

- Waterpump is buggered so no coolant flow and the temp really does shoot up to maximum straight away.

Do you guys have any idea what could be causing this?

Speedo sensors do shag out and they're on top of the diff. take it out and plug it in with a drill on the end it'll work if its good.

The temp sensor sounds like its shorting out somewhere to be doing that so I'd have it runnong and move the wires around and see what happens. Theres a seperate short loom that connects all the temp sensors to the main engine harness
