Runx gearbox noise on deceleration - WTF?

Postby theDiff » Thu Jan 31, 2013 9:56 pm

I have recently bought a 2001 Runx Z and all is going well, until I decelerate on the motorway from around 100kmh to below 85kmh.

When I do this (in 5th gear but take my foot off the gas) a weird noise occurs which you can hear at 10 & 16 secs in on this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=soACa9cCfw0

When I accelerate it goes away. When I engage the clutch it goes away. It only seems to be happening at certain speeds and is more pronounced in 5th gear. Have any other Runx owners had a similar issue?

One guy I know says its just the gears running against each other and his Runx used to do it too and that it was normal. Another says its the run bearing which is poked.

Anyone else got any ideas? Your help appreciated :)

Cheers - for that!

Forgot to mention that it has had its clutch replaced with a heavy duty one about 30,000km ago... While it is noisy, and other have said these cars are noisy on deceleration, I think it might be a bearing issue.

Seems to be common. Anyone have a ballpark figure of the cost on replacing them?

Sounds like gear chatter to me. Wonder if the clutch that was installed is a solid centred one.

Also the thread that iOnic posted up could be the problem, as it is quite common.

I agree - I think its somewhere between the clutch and gearbox. I guess it'll be a case of getting it looked at and figuring it out once and for all!

Changed the fluid and put some way better stuff in there. The chap who made the change is 99.99% certain it's a bearing issue and that it will need changing in the near/medium term.

Anyone know of a decent transmission specialist in Auckland? Also, anyone know the ballpark figure for replacing all bearings in a C64 gearbox?

Just as an add-on to what I said in that other thread, I went for a drive in my sisters' RunX Z again, the gearbox sounds much worse.. very surprising for a 70,000km car.

did you ever find out if the clutch was solid centre or not?

had the same in my old EVO and most gearbox places said was in the box,
but i had just fitted a HD clutch with a solid centre and a new standard clutch plate fixed it.

I get disgusted and weird looks when i lift off the gas in my EVO now with the new solid centered clutch. Its friggin loud gear chatter that resonates through the driveshaft :(

It wasn't the gearbox, had that checked and it's sweet. Had the clutch replaced with standard, had the tension pulley replaced, had the drive belt replaced and there is still a noise!

I wouldn't worry about it too much. My Allex RS180 (same car) does the same thing. Just a noisy gearbox. I put some Redline gearbox oil in (to help with sticky downshift- helped greatly with this), but this didn't make any difference to the gearbox noise. It's never got any worse. We had a Celica that did the same thing & never got any worse.

How did that happen, disassembled by someone with years of experience, or just flogged around by someone almost like you but with more confident BS??

Yeah - I think I'm being pedantic now. Comparing that YouTube clip to how the car sounds now and it's much better. And you're not the first 2ZZ-GE engine owner to say their gear box makes a bit of a racket. Oh well, glad we sorted that out :D

AND THEN THE ALTERNATOR BLEW UP! Which I'm now guessing was the issue. Perhaps on deceleration the pulley was having a spaz and making a weird squeal?
